The Marquess of Anglesey has been a public house since 1682. At that time the Marquess was two separate premises, on the corner of Bow street and Russell street was Edward Miles coffee house with the Marquess adjacent. It was not until 1908 when both premises merged. It was a major part of the local community and also frequented by local traders from the market.

The Marquess himself, Henry Paget, was born on 17 May 1768 and was the eldest son of the Earl of Uxbridge. The Marquess was a brilliant soldier and led the Cavalry as second-in command to the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo. He also lead a colourful life; he had eight children by his first wife before eloping with the Duke of Wellington's sister in law, by whom he had a further ten children.
